Kevin Buckland fra 350.org, som igennem et par måneder omkring Klimatopmødet i december næsten flyttede ind i vores kælder, sendte her til morgen en mail med link til denne video – de fire kunstnere får på blot to minutter fortalt en hel masse om nødvendigheden af 350 ppm på en vidunderligt charmerende måde.

Den 24. oktober er global klimaaktionsdag, hvor der er planlagt 3.559 klimaevents i 161 lande.

På Rådhuspladsen i København laver vi den 24. oktober en kæmpe 350-figur af mennesker, som den der ses på billedet.

Eventen er koordineret med aktiviteter i New Zealand og Indien. I New Zealand laver de et stort 3-tal, i Indien et stort 5-tal og i København laver vi afslutningsvis et stort nul. Tilsammen har vi et globalt 350-symbol.

Om aftenen er der klimafest i Huset i Magstræde, hvor the Shaking Sensations og Mixtune for Cully vil spille. Festen starter kl. 20.

Hvorfor deltage: 350 parts per million er ifølge mange forskere og klimaeksperter den øverste grænse for hvor høj koncentration af CO₂ i atmosfæren må være, hvis vi vil bevare et klima, der minder om det, vi har i dag. Accelererende opvarmning af de arktiske områder, samt andre tidlige advarsler om klimaforandringerne, har fået forskere til at konkludere, at vi med den nuværende koncentration af CO₂ i atmosfæren på 390 ppm allerede har overskredet grænsen for, hvad der er farligt. Hvis ikke vi hurtigt bringer CO₂ koncentrationen i atmosfæren ned under 350 ppm, risikerer vi at overskride vigtige ”tipping points”. Disse omfatter blandt andet at der frigives store mængder metangas fra optøede permafrostområder i Canada og Sibirien, samt der smelter store mængder is i Grønland og på Nordpolen. Begge dele vil føre til en forstærket og irreversibel opvarmning af kloden, som vil have voldsomme effekter på planeten og mennesker livsvilkår. Det er vigtigt, at vi viser politikkerne, at vi ikke vil acceptere en sådan udvikling.

We’re celebrating a new holiday around the office today: it’s the 350th day of the year, and since we’re numerologists, we pretty much have to mark the occasion.

Actually, it’s most appropriate, because we have more to celebrate today than any time since our campaign began a year ago. Thanks to all of your hard work in the last year, the news that this is the most important number in the world has begun to spread.

We saw just how far on Friday, in Poznan, Poland.  At the end of otherwise dreary UN Climate Talks, Al Gore gave a big speech to everyone there. It was well-received–but by far the longest and loudest applause came when he announced that he too has joined the 350 bandwagon. “Even a goal of 450 parts per million, which seems so difficult today, is inadequate,” said Gore, adding we “need to toughen that goal to 350 parts per million.”

Those few words changed the course of the climate debate. We now have the most important political figure in the global warming world agreeing with the most important scientific figure, James Hansen, that 350 has got to be the target. It was a brave thing for Gore to do–it would have been far easier not to upset the process, even though its sleepwalking towards a treaty too tame to do any good. Instead, Al Gore told the truth.

Telling the truth–it’s what we all need to do for the year to come. We’re more excited than ever about our plans for a a big mobilization in 2009, and we’ll be in touch soon to make sure you’re ready to go.

But not today. Today, no links to click, or e-mails to send. Just a well-deserved moment of celebration. You’ve helped start the process of changing the world.

I’m writing again from the UN Climate talks in Poland, where one thing has become heartbreakingly apparent: for some people, these negotiations aren’t just about numbers and compromise and diplomacy.  For some people, these negotiations are about survival.
People toss around a lot of lofty words at the UN, so let me be clear.  I’m not talking about “survival” as an abstract concept, or some distant problem for future generations. I’m talking about countries and peoples getting quite literally wiped off the map within decades.  I’m talking about human lives and livelihoods being destroyed by the impacts of climate change here and now.

Here’s the worst part: the countries facing the biggest impacts of climate change are also the countries most poorly represented here in the United Nations.

With the static of the UN and the distractions of a 24-hour news cycle, the countries fighting on the front lines of climate change are struggling to get the attention they deserve. Case in point: last week 49 of the world’s most vulnerable countries endorsed the 350 target that the latest science calls for.  Instead of recognizing the importance of this call, some EU leaders have been backpedaling on their already weak climate commitments.

The time has come to change the conversation in Poland, to send one clear message that cuts through the static.

That’s where you come in.  If we come together, we can amplify the voices of the people who are most threatened by climate change.  Can you take a stand for survival by signing the pledge here? http://www.350.org/survival

Youth from around the world are spending the next 24 hours pressuring their country’s UN negotiators to sign on to the very same same survival pledge–and their efforts will be made much easier if they have people like you supporting them from every corner of the earth.

We’ll put your messages directly in front of world leaders by staging a high-profile delivery on the last day of the negotiations.  This plan will only work if we get enough people signing on before the end of the week to make it count.  With your help, we can make the “survival principle” a key message of the UN negotiations.  And upon that principle, the world can build an equitable global climate agreement around science-based targets–targets like 350, the safe upper limit of CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere.

When I landed in Poland for the UN Climate talks a week ago, I thought I knew what to expect: a few meetings, some bureaucratic backpedaling, and some frustratingly slow progress on a global climate treaty.  I wasn’t prepared for feeling moved, deeply, by the stories from those on the front lines of climate change.  These are stories from countries like Kiribati and Tuvalu, island nations who are losing their crops and drinking water due to the ever encroaching sea. Left unchecked, within my lifetime there may be nothing left of these nations but waves.

We can prevent a climate catastrophe.  The time has come for the world to stand together.  Please join us.
